Albert Einstein himself considered plumbing to be a noble trade. Einstein strongly disliked the mixing of science with politics and encouraged fellow scientists to refuse to testify before Congress. In 1954, due to this very issue, he was quoted as saying, “If I would be a young man again and had to decide how to make my living, I would not try to become a scientist or scholar or teacher. I would rather choose to be a plumber in the hope to find the modest degree of independence still available under present circumstances.” As a result of this comment, the Plumbers and Steamfitters Union in Washington, D.C. made him an honorary plumber.
